The 8th grade students took a field trip with Mr. Uber to Viva Seed, a Ranch near San Juan de Abajo to observe the very intense process that corn must go through to become the chosen seed that ends up on our dinner plates. Viva Ranch is more like a giant science experiment than a farm. The students learned how they use selective breeding and hybrid vigor to create the best corn and sunflower seeds (for the oil) possible. During this process of up to 10 years, they test thousands of different types before they end up with the one they consider the best.
